Maybe once a week a review on a plugin for WordPress. Obviously not only the paid plugins but also the free ones. There are some real goog plugins out there and a review would be usefull.

  • http://thekingdom.be Be.

I’m not a pro or making a living our of web design / development but owning and managing a network of sites sharing the same roots and having different (outdated) themes, I recently started to centralise the index, single, post, archives, etc. while letting each site apply its own theme and stylesheet. (have a look at http://thekingdom.be and see the others sites such as the Kingdom Kitchen, links are in the sidebar).

I’m planning on extending that to every single common functions, styles, behaviors, creating what is to become a master theme upon which child themes can apply their specifics. As usual in this type of approach, I have to first reduce the functional scope and the features before extending them again. I have some instincts and a limited php development experience helping me but I’d love to see these topics discussed and explored on WPTuts+ by true specialists and especially how I can leverage on WP fonctionalities, API, etc. to achieve better results in this scope.

    • http://thekingdom.be Be.

… and I forgot Multi-languages and how to be able to offer a full wp site in three languages (FR, EN, PL) with automated translations (at least for posts that I won’t translate manually) would be a great topic too.
The google translation links we added are helping but are far from being ideal for visitors only mastering one language and being uncomfortable with even just menus and links in another language.

What we REALLY need are tutorials which teach how to build wordpress themes FROM SCRATCH…

    The series should…

    1. Be a START to FINISH project
    2. Assume beginner to intermediate proficiency with PHP and WordPress
    3. Explain core WP functions
    4. Explain (in detail) the creation of the main WP includes including
    header.php
    sidebar.php
    etc…

    This is really needed.

    • http://www.tkmcooper.com Terry

I agree completely. Speaking as someone who is versed in HTML/CSS and has been learning PHP for about a year, but with no expereince at all of using WordPress, I’d love to see a ‘WordPress site from scratch’ series.

    • Kyle

      +1

It’s hard to find a definitive source that covers the fundamentals and “why things are the way they are”

If this is too large of a request, even a good thorough breakdown of a starter-kit like Starkers would be sweet.

      • t.g

And in addition the specific new functions on each wp update!

      • Andrew

Envato did a screencast series that covered a PSD to theme example. Do a search for “WordPress for designers” and you should find it pretty easily. It should help explain a lot of the basics, it is one of the things I first started learning from.

        • sleeper

I looked couldn’t find it. Please post a link.

Here is an example of a serious walk-through on one aspect of WordPress: The loop and more specifically, using “query_post” . http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/91-the-wordpress-loop/

          Note several things:

          1. He digs into one CRITICAL aspect of WordPress, (again) “the loop”.
          2. Then he drills down onto ONE specific feature: “query_posts”
          3. Then he takes “query_posts” through a very useful test drive, explain core concepts and detailing how knowledge of this concept can be used in THE REAL WORLD.

This screen-cast was (IMHO) MUCH better than his title “WordPress 3: Creating and Editing Custom Themes” wherein he states that he will teach you… “… how to build a custom WordPress theme from scratch and satisfy common client requests.”

Problem was, in the first chapter, he points us to a custom theme that we were to use for the tutorial. Already built….NOT from scratch…further, he never really stepped through and explained the code used in the template..

          Scratch … good people….means … a BLANK page…

          I want DETAILS!!!

Let’s get into the WordPress Core and demystify how it works.
Lets dig into the the database and learn to leverage that understanding
Lets walk through the template files and build them from scratch!
Let’s go through the Plugin API and explain not only the “How to’s” but also the “why to’s”…

you know… real developer stuff. That’s what i’d like to see. Cuz I aint seen it yet!

Do that and I’ll buy you a case of whatever your drinkin!

          peace!

I would like to see a good tutorial about customizing the Query to display (custom post type)posts for a date range.

    My problem:
If the actual date is later then 1st October, then only show the (custom post type)posts from 1st October this year until now.
If the actual date is between 1st January and 1st March, then only show the (custom post type)posts from 1st October last year until now.
If the actual date is between 1st March and 1st October, then only show the (custom post type)posts from 1st March this year until now.

I would like to request that an effort be made to make the code used on the site secure, and point out what needs to be done or what is done in each tutorial to make it secure.

I love nettuts, but in their tuts I frequently find language that says “but in a real world case, you would do x, y and z, to make it secure.” I am requesting that if you find the need to say “but in a real world case” you consider the tut incomplete, and not post it until this information is provided. People in forums complain that “noobs” write horrible code and don’t do x, y, and z. Well, if they are shown what to do, and probably more importantly why to do it, they will start doing x, y and z.

I have the book, “Professional WordPress Plugin Development,” and it does a good job of explaining this topics, and points out ways that a lot of the “heavy-lifting” can be done by WordPress when it comes to securing a plugin. Please do this, even if it serves as a reminder for plugin devs to do this.

Other than that, I would love to see development tutorials, theme coding tutorials, and even roundups of really cool ways WordPress is used, beyond “conventional” sites. There is also something about WordPress and scalability, would like to see something about keeping WordPress scalable. Maybe tuts on how to improve on a plugin, or to take an existing plugin and make it work the way you want it to.

I have already RSS’ed this site, really excited to see this as a new Envato site!

I would like to see tutorials for different levels of users. I am a starter and i would be interested in tutorials similar to the ones you have on psd.tuts with martin perhiniak i believe. It is awesome when the tuts are short and straight on topic without confusing the mind with this and that information that is not relevant. Another cool think would be to put a series of tutorials which will assure the readers with a constant flow of understanding rather than touching chaotically on random topics. I appreciate your initiative to start this site and i hope i can learn a lot. Thank you.

  • Dennis

Wow, this is a really nice surprise, thanks for creating this site! :)

I would love to see the PSD to HTML tut finished off by turning it into a fully functioning WordPress theme as promised by Jeffery.

  • JPry

One other user here mentioned that they’d like to see some tuts about poorly-documented pieces of the WordPress core, and I agree. In particular, how about a tutorial on modifying Walker classes in the code? Some time ago, I was working on a site where I needed to modify the code output of the built-in Nav menus, and the only way I could find was to create my own walker. I was able to figure it out, but documentation was sorely lacking.

This may not always be necessary if there are filters that can be applied, but it would certainly be useful to plenty of developers out there.

In addition to that specific request, I think it would be good to have some examples of how to use many of the built-in features of WordPress, similar to the Custom Post type tutorials.

Another idea would perhaps be a challenge to developers: You give a specific topic within WordPress, and everyone who wants to submits their tutorial, and then publish the best version.

I would like to know common mistakes in wordpress and what to avoid.
Can a regular (read: static) web designer and rather new to PHP fill in the gaps with this CMS (compared to other non-php CMS choices?).

How to keep things secure? Seems like wordpress happens to break some plugins after updates and you need to upgrade every month. How to deal with this… This is one of the reasons I stayed off of WordPress for some time (seems like a leap of faith mont after month, which clients should really like). How can you keep things up and running and rely on it for commercial use?

I used it once for a site and for me the query is a pain to control if you want to lookup multiple custom post types and the relevant data. Maybe some info regarding this and how to interpret those building stones (from start to finish)?

Still, I always seem to have a love/hate relationship with wordpress, because of the above…
Hope this site brings some clarity for me. Really looking forward for this!

I would love to get more information on the coding for non-traditional wordpress sites like a portfolio website, whether that means a list of widgets that are widely used or convenient for this site type or coding it yourself.

  • http://www.feedthebeats.com/ Jasper Burns

A REALLY in-depth but simple way to create new WordPress themes for people who are comfortable with Photoshop but not coding.

Like, imagine I’ve never coded before. Is there an easy free (or cheap) WYSIWYG editor that works well? Or could you break down code into a copy/paste ordeal where we just insert our own graphical elements?

It’s a lot to ask, but that would be nice.

  • Vanessa

There are so many WP sites out there… it would be awesome to have a weekly / bi-weekly segment that finds the butt-ugliest one, or perhaps the most poorly designed, and breaks it down, code wise, and provides tips for improvement (either in function, structure, or design). You could even give something to the users and have contests for the “best” fix, even if it’s a little subjective! :O)

Even though there are plenty of tips & tutorials on custom taxonomies, I find there is a big void of actual applications (sans the “movie database” overused example).

How can we take advantage of our custom taxonomies?

    Is search filtering like this http://www.cocosuites. com/en/suites/Spain/Barcelona, http://www.bankifsccode. com, http://www.car. gr/classifieds/cars/search/
possible with wordpress, custom taxonomies and custom fields?

  • http://www.guillaumevoisin.fr Guillaume

So nice that you’ve launched a WordPress Tuts Plus !
I would really like to see a tut on how to protect some custom content type such as a private portfolio. Simple configuration in administration where you can choose a password to protect some custom post types. But more efficitiently that private posts that actually appear in search engines.
So a custom post types won’t be crawled in any way (hidden in RSS feed, search results etc…)

Very looking forward to read some great tuts!

    Thanks!

  • Martin Harvey

I think a tutorial on creating and sending forms using AJAX and the wp_mail function would be good. Also, an in-depth session on working with Custom Post Types and Taxonomies would be useful. Generally, a section dedicated to the lesser known functions of WP would be exrtremely valuable. There is lots on the interent about this sort of stuff but it never seems very comprehensive!

    • Martin Harvey

Oh…and while I think about it Custom Admin Panels how to…

  • http://www.nomad-one.com nomadone

Hi great site looking forward to what lies ahead here.

I have been developing wordpress sites for the last 5 years or so and more seriously for about 3 years. One thing I still haven’t come to terms with, and it’s probably because my focus is mostly front-end is the Options Panel. I can’t for the life of me understand why it has to be so darn difficult.

I’ve created my own options panel using a custom post type and then creating for that post type a custom write panel from some code I managed to get hold of from another developer and it’s super easy to implement, but of course comes with the baggage of being a custom post type.

I would very much be interested in a much easier method of creating an options panel. The method most tutorials use of saying “paste this code in your functions.php” doesn’t really help anyone trying to understand the nuts and bolts of the code. Even if it has to be a step by step series of posts covering all aspects of options panels, and done in a less bloated form that would benefit large amounts of more front end orientated web designers.

As WordPress is based on PHP I would like a tutorial or two – ( to be used as a reference as much as anything) which covers the key aspects of PHP as commonly used in WordPress themes and plug ins…..

On many WordPress answer forums the questions are more often than not raised because of peoples general lack of PHP knowledge ..and although it is not a direct WordPress topic it is the fabric on which WordPress is built

NetTuts + does at times cover PHP but relates it more to CodeIgnighter, PHPCake etc rather than WordPress

Copy/Paste of code is no solution if you want to write and code plugins and themes yourself.

Here is a good one. We are asked this almost on every project that we work on. A contact form on a WP site that will submit contact information data in to Microsoft SQL DB and be able to auto generate an ID for that contact. That is – WP site is sing a MySQL and contact form submits data entirely into a separate DB.

    Sometimes it’s a desperate project.

Anyway, I am glad for tis addition. So, “Let’s get to it.”

Looking forward to this site! My vote would be to see more custom coding/PHP techniques for pushing WP just a little past its boundaries. For example I recently had a pretty tough time figuring out how to dynamically display “This is image X of Y” (1 of 4, etc) along with a foreach loop of image attachments.

I do original theme development totally from scratch, using WP as a CMS, so anything along those lines would be appreciated.

  • Karim

Congrats of the launch of the new website. Its said quite a few times before but i would like to see a “WordPress as a CMS” tut.

What i do not understand is: if there are so many plugins out there that enable you to tweak your WordPress Blog into a CMS then why don’t the intelligent (open-source-loving) folks at WordPress/Automattic fork a new project called the “WordPressCMS” and compete with the likes of Joomla/Drupal etc.

It would be great if there would be a Tut that describes how to create a CMS out of WordPress – with the needed plugins like

    page management,
    custom post types,
    custom menus etc.

I’m someone who is using wordpress quite a lot. But – recently due to some other not-so-user-friendly CMSs im in a situation to decide wether to mould my WordPress into a CMS or make my own CMS with e.g Codeigniter with my proper needs.

May be a community member wants to take the initiative and start such a series. Would be great to use WordPress as a CMS – mostly because its quite user-friendly.

    Thanx & Greets

    • http://unrelatedmedia.ca Neil Davidson

      Hello Karim,

WordPress is a fully functional Content Management System (CMS). Plugins are simply enhancements that serve a specific function.

WordPress is quickly passing Drupal, Joomla, Silverstripe, ModX and other open source CMS’ .

While WordPress was originally built as a blogging engine with a very easy-to-use interface for the non-technical it’s origins remain the same. However, the ease of which the core functions can be incorporated to achieve unexpected results (like creating an e-commerce store with custom post types) have allowed plugin and theme developers to truly shine. No other current CMS does this and remains friendly to those not technically inclined.

WordPress is friendly to users and quite fun for developers to work with. It is defined as a CMS because you can update any part of the website content you like with relative ease. So, in answer to your request for a tutorial series – it starts with creating themes. WordPress is already a CMS – themes are what make it excel!

      Good luck to you!

  • Dave

So Excited about this tuts site, use wp for every site I do,

a few votes for a lot of whats above and one or two others:

    – Theming – beginning to advanced – definitely more advanced aspects would be great, but some basics that seem poorly covered previously on other sites, ie: a detailed tutorial on creating a styling comments, again from basic to advanced,

    – Creating various types of custom widgets and plugins

    – A tutorial on how to make a proper options page, using the settings API. +1000 using the conventional built in wordPress UI etc and maybe extending on previous tuts+ options page tutorials

    – clear explanations of everyday and the more obscure wp code, snippets are abundant, but clear explanations of how you would re-use that code in different cases seems lacking.

    – more use case theming tutorials, maybe guest developers sharing clever ways they’ve solved real world design challenges, ie: anyone setup a larger e-store with wp? record store? movie database? particularly considering the planning around how one would structure sites with more complex data relationships.

Sites looking great already. thanks for the fantastic resources that all of your ‘tuts’ sites provide.

  • http://professionaldilettante.com Zach Hannes

Please cover how to separate concerns, how to apply MVC or other design patterns to theme and plugin development. There are several plugins available for MVC wordpress development but they are poorly documented. A roll your own MVC wordpress theme would be a great tutorial.

    Thanks!

  • Qaysar

    Hello,

Thank you for the oppertunity to give suggestions, I think their should a complete section on creating a wordpress theme from the backend to frontend and not just snippets.

This is a great way for new and raw talent to learn some amazing techniques and if they have a focus point of what to do and how to do it, this would be a great advantage.

To make it a complete series of tutorials creating a complete website and not snippets of different designs. Also on every tutorial to have the ability to download code and PSD files.

The “Business” section is a little light right now, and that’s an area where I might light to contribute. How about how to videos that are marketing tutorials for wordpress? Topics could be

    - wordpress for service businesses: how to choose content for the home page
    - customizing a premium theme [e.g., Denoizzed's King Size]. This would require permission I’m guessing from the theme authors
    - wordpress themes + best practices for consultants
    - wordpress themes + best practices for authors
    - wordpress themes + best practices for ecommerce (clothing)

These would be meta products to broaden the theme’s available market. A non-technical person would need to hire a tech person to install WP, but then the rest could be accomplished using a combo of standard WP101 tuts + theme-specific tuts.

    Hi All!

I would REALLY LOVE a good explanation/walk through about multisite using subdomains and domain mapping.
What I find are articles that for some reason take ages to explain how to activate multisite which is easy and only takes a few minutes. For some strange reason they then breeze over the domain mapping, dns, alias and wildcard domains settings, which according to me is the hard part for me as a designer (for non-developers, sys admins etc it’s probably easy).

    Kind Regards,
