Making a Living With WordPress

Making a Living With WordPress

With WordPress powering 8% of the websites in the world, the demand for WordPress related services is increasing exponentially. Not every WordPress website is owned by a developer. After the users get familiar with basic WordPress usage, they would need more specialized services to enhance the way their website looks or to add new features. If you offer your clients WordPress based websites or are involved in any WordPress based development, then this article is just for you.

Most WordPress site owners have got their website made by others, or have managed to somehow set it up themselves by reading few articles or using one click installation provided by most hosting companies. Once these users start understanding how they could leverage the website, they would need additional services to make their website better and more functional.

These things would be like a custom theme, plugin or just some basic theme modification work. This basic requirement creates a whole new market place which developers like me and you could cater to.

If you offer custom design or development, working with different clients and their requirements might have offered you a lot of experience. This can be used to create products or services specially targeted for WordPress users. Not only will this provide additional source of income if done well, but if it also addresses problems faced by WordPress users, then it can be the only thing you need to do to make a living.

In this article, we will try to identify these distinct WordPress services into different categories and see how few companies are dominating the market.

Examples of WordPress Based Services or Products

Theme Design

Unless you have a big client, the profit from a single custom made website project is not much. Most projects also end up as a disappointment, as clients sometimes reject good design ideas. Getting into theme development, gives designers the opportunity to work on their own time, use good design principles and create something they are proud of. Marketplaces such as ThemeForest.net offer between 50 to 70% of the sale amount to all theme developers. Considering a basic WordPress theme is priced around $40 on ThemeForest, even if 100 people download it, it would mean the designer earns $2,000. This is actually more than what most freelance designers and small companies in regions like India earn from a custom design project.

Some top theme developers like Orman Clark have around 18 themes with over 23,000 sales. If you do the math, it’s a pretty impressive number. Of course we would not reach that number in one day, but it’s better to start now, and if you have multiple themes for sale this could be a nice way to do what you love and earn money.

Plugin or App Theme Development

One of the plugins that I absolutely love and use for each single WordPress project is Gravity Forms. There are many free plugins similar to this and they are great, but I and many other users find this plugin to be the best. The developers have made one thing, and this one thing named “Gravity Forms” makes creating complex forms as easy as creating a WordPress post.

Gravity Forms charges just $39 for a basic license. Having a useful product such as this along with a low price has made Gravity Forms a market leader in the WordPress forms category. Low price seems less profit, but considering the number of WordPress websites, this can get very profitable. As of today this plugin is installed on more than 300,000 WordPress websites. As WordPress developers, some of us might have already created custom functionalities for our clients. Creating a premium plugin out of it can add a new source of income.

WordPress Specific Web Hosting

Over the last few years, WordPress specific hosting has become more than just a marketing gimmick. While most web hosting companies are using WordPress in their website promotion only for SEO reasons some companies such as WPEngine.com & Page.ly have become specialized WordPress hosting platforms with almost no competition.

Many web hosting companies offer one click installation of WordPress, but WordPress users do require many other features such as automated security updates, daily backups, one click restore, etc. which are not addressed by most hosts. Despite WordPress being easy to update, many users still ignore it or are unaware of it.

For such a market, selling WordPress specific hosting which allows users to focus on their site and content while security updates & backups are taken care of becomes more useful than a general web hosting account. If you currently charge $10/month for general hosting, then you could easily charge double for WordPress specific services with your hosting. Since there are very few companies like WPEngine or Page.ly, if you start now you definitely would be among the first few companies with less competition.

Premium Support, Backup & Maintenance Services

Like WordPress specific hosting you could package your after sales maintenance services as WordPress management to offer optimization, regular security audits, backups for a fixed monthly or yearly fee. Most companies have already started doing this but are not marketing it well. If you are able to promote this service and get good reviews, even doing general updates could add an additional source of income.

Services like ManageWP.com & WPRemote.com allows us to update WordPress core, plugins, themes & take backups remotely in just a few clicks. By using this as the tool to manage your WordPress customers, instead of logging into each customer’s website, you could remotely manage all WordPress websites through one single control panel. Considering these services cost as low as $0.02 per website and your few minutes each day there is no additional requirement to start offering WordPress management services and make decent profits from day one.

While being a WordPress designer or developer and working on custom projects gives a good income, the above business ideas would give regular income by doing exactly what you want to do and on your own terms. It makes sense to get started early and who knows you could be the next person to be featured on ThemeForest for reaching a million dollars in sales.

If you have any more ideas please share them in the comments below.

I’ve been using wordpress as an Application platform for a while now, its easy and elegant. Saves lot of time. WordPress rocks!

  • Ciprian Turcu

Freelance WordPress work pays good but as it became so popular it also became very targeted by “less expensive” freelance developers and because of this it became harder to get to some clients that look at price before quality.
I guess that’s a normal step that was inevitable but still, a little hard to swallow for some developers that have to fight with the “cheap” competition. My point, It’s a good way to make a living with just freelance work, but the competition is growing, so i guess, watch for that angle too.

    • http://wpblogexperts.com/ Ishan

Well, that’s true! And clients looking for low prices have so many choices that they sometimes have ridiculous expectations. I was talking to a client and he said that he would not pay more than $7 per hour and that his WordPress guy had talent.

Though I guess that is why he had a website that looked as if it was designed by a 5 year old with crayons! We can just leave the cheap clients to deal with cheaper freelancers and work with a few fixed ones. Though it will take more focus and time in this competition.

      • http://jvgraph.com Juan

I couldn’t agree more I’m new to WordPress but I have been designing statics site for a while now, I had a similar case as you did Ishan a client ask me to design and code a web site and told me that he couldn’t pay more than $500. He told me that somebody could do it for that price, and website was a portfolio for an architect firm.

        • http://zreedee.com Luis

If an architect cannot spend more than 500$ for his site I wouldn’t do it because those are the kind of clients that end driving you crazy during the development and paying late or never.

A good custom site costs money and playing the “I would do it for less money” game is always bad for all of us.

    • Steven

Couldn’t agree more Ciprian! I have had people come to me with a WordPress theme that was using a marketplace theme as a base and the “developer / designer” just changed the theme settings (which were not built using WordPress best practices – settings API and such) add the logo and served them their “custom” WordPress site for very cheap.

Hard to compete with that!! Fortunately I get some good business from these sources. People want to customize their site more and many times we start from scratch – properly planing and designing their site to their needs, which many marketplace themes don’t address. In my experience people ALWAYS want to make customizations and are usually willing to spend more to get it right.

But up front – when they are presented with a price for a custom site over a marketplace theme where they can add their logo and change the color – they will go for that…and someone will charge them to do it for them. Hard to compete with that.

Fortunately a lot of WordPress work comes from making custom themes for clients as well as building plugins and making theme customizations, not to mention consultation.

      • http://www.webrewired.com Daniyal

I personally am facing the same situation with WordPress developers offering cheap services almost half the price of an actual cost BUT I think it’ll steadily change.

WordPress is sorta new thing and people are trying their hand on getting themes and setting things up but I think firms or buyers who appreciate quality will soon realise that they are not getting the right thing by these people offering a low priced thing and then they’ll consider to pay a decent amount and get the right thing done.

  • http://www.b4ucode.com Kailan Wyatt

There’s actually couple more I would add to that already good list.

    - Writing Tutorials based on your knowledge of WordPress
If you have something to share about WordPress whether a how-to guide or tip, you can surely write and submit tutorials for payment.

    - Start a WordPress Training site
You can build a subscription or sell multimedia content on how to use WordPress, Build themes and Plugins, Securing and maintaining wordpress sites and servers.

Knowledge goes a long way. Sometimes, we don’t always have to write an app to make money.

    • Harish

Hey that’s a good point I missed. There is currently few people providing such training and there are few companies offering video tutorials that we could integrate with our clients sites.

I will try to update this article with your point.

      • http://www.sanjaykhemlani.com/ sanjay

I agree with Kailan, writing tuts and sharing info thru premium sites can be profitable as well. Good article Harish!

    • http://iamSeanGrant.com Sean Grant

I agree with Kailan as well.

I do the standard Theme creations, conversions, customizations, and overall WordPress help, but a big reason I get repeat clients and word of mouth is by helping clients get familiar with their WordPress install. I’ve done lots of 1-on-1 tutoring for fellow Developers, Small business owners, and the casual blogger. Each of them love to have the direct access to someone with lots of WordPress knowledge.

With all that said I’m am now about to join the ThemeForest arena and perhaps a custom Plugin (utilizing eBay API and affiliate links) to try my hand at that kind of income. :)

      Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I keep it simple and sell websites created with WordPress. Most of them are simple, for little companies. But WordPress makes it possible to build quick a great website with CMS, so prices stay relative low.
Next to that, I found out that there is a market for WordPress training. There are a lot of people that want to build a website on their own, not knowing WordPress is the perfect tool for them.

  • Custom icon design

That’s a good ideas to increase income, but the first thing is you should have enough knowledge in wp. I have a big interested in how to get the knowledge about the wp, how should we study the wp in a short time?

    • http://www.harishchouhan.com Harish

      Hi,
Best way would be reading few getting started articles and then using a base theme at WordPress.org to create your own website. Until you experiment, trying to make something new, its hard to learn.

    • Julien Desrosiers

Learning a bit at a time can take you a long way. If you learn to use only one function every day, do the math: within two months you know ~60 functions.

  • http://migratetowp.com Jordi Cabot

Given that WP is becoming more and more popular, there are also more and more people/businesses that want to “go wordpress”. My wordpress-related business (http://migratetowp.com/) consists in helping them to convert their sites (Drupal, Joomla, Custom CSM,…) to WordPress.

  • http://www.paulund.co.uk Paul

This is so true about the WordPress themes, I’ve seen many themes on Themeforest get 10/20 downloads on the first day, have this on there for a year or two and just from that one theme you can make much more money than a custom theme. Getting a theme of themeforest is something I am aiming for.

  • http://palpaldal.com Nuruzzaman Sheikh

Wow! this is a really nice article. This article has rejuvenate me in the WP market again. Well written Harish.

    • http://www.harishchouhan.com Harish

I am glad you liked it. Once the competition increases, it would be good to see how many different ideas people come up with using WordPress.

  • http://www.jguiss.com/wordpress Julien

I planify to open a theme design market place… Theme forest is an incredible success !

    • http://www.simonswiss.com Simon

It’s pretty hard to compete with ThemeForest (all the more because there are a couple of other big time WP theme marketplaces) but another way of making money is Envato’s affiliate programme.

If you have the time to write WP theme reviews of lists of “20 Beautiful, Responsive WP Themes” and such, you may make quite a bit of money via the referrals you send TF’s way..

This is something i am willing to do, as well as getting my first WP theme on ThemeForest, but for the moment i am putting all my free time efforts into learning everything i can about WP and developing themes for this framework.

  • http://wpsites.net Brad Dalton

There’s plenty of work for WordPress consultants and the average rate is around $50 an hour so its fairly good money.

I know some web designers charging $200 an hour and they’re swamped

  • http://bowesales.com Jesse

Great Article! I recently adjusted my business plan to accommodate monthly services to nurture clients more. So far the response is great! Still get low-ballers though, not much you can do about them.

  • http://www.technology-sutra.com Pradeep Mamgain

Nicely written article. I have written quite a few tutorials on wordpress, I would like to monetize those.

  • http://www.dianedenise.com Diane

Hay, thanks for sharing! I’m going to add these new maintenance services to my marketing plan. By communicating every detail of the services developers provide their clients, clients will understand and value developers more!
